The temperature-independent properties of 17-4 PH stainless steel make it highly corrosion-resistant and appropriate for various applications. It could be precipitation hardened at relatively low temperatures to achieve improved strength with high resistance to scaling and distortion during heat treatment. The only thing to avoid is using this particular grade of stainless steel in the annealed condition. It exhibits excellent welding and mechanical properties, so it is considered suitable for different industrial applications.

The alloy 17-4PH (UNS S17400) contains niobium, further enhancing its precipitation-hardening ability. It offers excellent corrosion resistance and high strength and hardness. However, the material is not recommended for service over temperatures of 572°F (300°C) or in cryogenic conditions. The highest mechanical properties are achieved if this material is subjected to age-hardening heat treatment, especially for temperatures close to 900°F (482°C). In corrosion resistance, Alloy 17-4PH Plate equals 304 stainless steel in most environments and in many others, does better than the 400 series of stainless steel.
