Oil quenching is done to the ASTM A479 UNS S44004 hex bar to maximize its hardness properties. Heat treatment not only increases its hardness but the mechanical strength and wear resistance of the grade ASTM A276 type 440C flat bar also greatly boosts. Controls on the mirror finish can be attained with a procedure as simple as polishing. Contra austenitic grades, 440C stainless steel rods are moderate resistance corrosion material compared to alloy 304. Even though this grade of stainless steel is hardenable through the use of a heat treatment procedure, machining is preferred on the DIN 1.4125 square bar in an annealed condition.
